Collection of Landscapes

The Dorset AONB is much more than just one fine landscape - it is a collection of fine landscapes, each with its own characteristics and sense of place. Chalk downland, limestone country, Greensand ridges and clay vales all occur in the Dorset AONB and create striking sequences of beautiful countryside that are unique in Britain.  To understand the diverse landscape character of the Dorset AONB, download the publication Conserving Character.

The contrast and diversity of these landscapes can be seen in Purbeck, where the landscapes of the Dorset AONB are represented on a miniature scale to create scenery of spectacular beauty and contrasts, which mirrors that of the whole AONB.

The ridge tops of West Dorset add an extra dimension to the Dorset AONB landscape by providing stark contrasts of landform and give uninterrupted panoramic views of the complex patterns and textures of the surrounding landscapes.

Earth works, monuments and tree clumps bring extra interest to the Dorset AONB landscape. Look out for our Landmarks Project that will give you the chance to identify the important landmarks in your local area - to conserve, enhance or simply to share!
